The Big Question - Who made the Victorians healthier?

Which person had the most impact on Victorian public health?

Joseph Lister?
Joseph Bazalgette?
Florence Nightingale?
Louis Pasteur?
Dr John Snow?

This week we started our projects. We are going to work in groups to showcase the work of one of the above Victorians, showing the impact that they had on Victorian public health.

Scarlet

I am going to do a model of Florence Nightingale, with a small grave stone made out of Mod Roc saying who she was, what she did and how she died.

Joseph
Y5 Neptune
I am going to do a puppet show of Dr John Snow
with 5 or so puppets of John snow and victims talking to them. I will write a script that will tell the audience about his important discovery.

It was the turn of Joseph Lister this week. We researched on the internet and in texts. We found out that he is known as 'The Father of Antiseptic Surgery'.

Who.......do you think had the most impact?
Why.........................................?  Explain.

Victorian Public Health

We have been researching the Victorian cholera epidemics and the resulting improvements in public health. Cross Ness Pumping Station is a local example of Victorian engineering, that had an impact on public health. It was designed by Joseph Bazalgette. During our computing lessons we have been researching him and the Cross Ness Pumping Station.

We also learnt about a man called Dr John Snow. Try playing this game at home to help him make the link between drinking water and cholera.

Trip to Kent Life Heritage Farm

Don't forget about our trip next week to Kent Life. Our booked work shops are Victorian Food and The Victorian Schoolroom. There are lots of other interesting things to see. Take a look at their web site.   http://www.kentlife.org.uk/

We are travelling there by coach - Red Route Buses

It should be a great trip and don't forget that you may dress up as a Victorian if you want to. Your teachers are!
