At Beths I learnt how to say merry Christmas in Spanish and it is Feliz Navidad by Katie
Millie - it was a very good experience at Beths , I especially liked the science .
Sophie- at Beths grammar school we learnt biology, chemistry and physics! We learnt one each week in science!

At Beths we had a very funny maths teacher but science was my favorot -Olivia :)

I really enjoyed Beth's we done so many  fun things Secondary school looks fun/ Ameena.
Its a enjoyable place to learn for three weeks.                                                                                      Jasmine
What i loved at Beth school is the Spanish and the science/TIa
I really enjoyed Spanish and science so I am really excited about maths. - Juanita

Class Neptune visited BETHs Grammar School

It was fun doing Spanish and science by Lewis
At Beth's it is interesting and it was nice experiencing working at a secondary school. Itwas really fun doing Spanish and science By Theo.
Beth's was really fun because in the science and Spanish they were really kind and the paintings were amazingly epic.
I liked the Spanish because we got to be pointing to different faces happy and sad also the science because they do experiments. We drew dots in pen then we put them into a pot of water and the pen rose higher and higher but most of it was the same colour but you did have different colours (By Luca)
At Beth's we were learnt Spanish, Some of are class can't speak Spanish . In Spanish you to is you to is ¿y ?. This is how to say 'and you'. Tyler

Science Research

For the last two weeks we have been researching two famous scientists and inventors; Spencer Silver and Ruth Benerito. This is what some of us found out -

Spencer Silver
Chemist Spencer Silver worked at Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (now called 3M), where in 1968 he invented a "low tack" adhesive based on acrylate copolymer microspheres, tiny bubbles that kept the glue from bonding firmly. This was considered an odd and rather useless discovery -- the company wanted a stronger adhesive, not a weaker one -- and Silver was soon reassigned to other projects. Six years later he demonstrated his adhesive to colleague Art Fry, who thought of bookmarks that fell out of his church hymnals and solved that problem by making the bookmarks slightly sticky with Silver's adhesive.

Ruth Benerito
Ruth Benerito, a chemist, is widely known for her development of wrinkle-free cotton. She was born in New Orleans, Lousiana and studied chemistry at the women's college of Tulane University, Sophie Newcomb College. She received her B.S. in 1935, M.S. in 1938, and her Ph. D. from the University of Chicago in 1948. Benerito worked at the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Southern Regional Research Centre for over 30 years. At the USDA, her specialty was solving problems in the textile, wood, and paper industries using cellulose chemistry. Her research led to a cotton fabric with wrinkle-resistance, which was further.

What is the definition of spam, cyber-bullying and virus?

This week we discussed everyone's thoughts and responses when asked about 4 potentially dangerous online situations.

We came up with this checklist to keep ourselves safe.
1. Check email attachments are safe to open (confirm the sender or use an anti-virus software)
2. Delete any spam messages (i.e. unwanted adverts or 'prizes' you have won)
3. Never agree to meet up with strangers online (they may not be who they say they are!)
4. Always report incidents of cyber-bullying immediately

Answers in the comment section: What should you do?

CEOP Cyber Cafe by Molly and Isabella

This afternoon, we have been learning about E-saftey, websites that use this can be Facebook Instagram snapchat and even Twitter. For example if someone says on Instagram do you want to meet up and you don't know them tell a responsible adult but DONT delete it you can show this as proof to report them!

Digital footprint

Today, in class Earth, we have been thinking about our 'Digital Footprint'. We have discovered that the things we put online can be seen by lots of people and might stay there online forever. They are like digital footprints - a trail that people can follow, picking up pieced of information about us. We all leave digital footprints and with every new profile, photo or comment we add new ones. People that you know, and people that you don't can learn a lot from them.

This video from Horrible Histories explains the consequences of not thinking about our Digital Footprint.

E-safety by Ali and Olivia

Today we were learning about e safety and wacht a video on Ceop. The video was about a girl who spread her imformation to the streets and a man found out how to get to her house. The man lied about being 13 and the girl lets the man steel her profle pics.

Eventually  , she pressed the report button and turned on the private setting.

We are making posters about how to stay safe on the internet  and came up with a good website for reporting called CEOP . Class Earth and Neptune

Spreadsheet formulae

=average(d3:d15) is an average formulae
To find the sum of a column you need to use this formula.
You need to write equals SUM and then write the number where your information starts, a colon and then the number where your information finishes and then a close bracket.
Here is an example: =sum(b2:b29)
By Reuben, Martyna
and Iona

Using formulae for totals and averages

For the past couple of weeks we've been learning about how to use Exel in different ways with the topic of turning coins. To find the total of boys and girls with the number of writing hand and non-writing hand we had to type in the formula =sum(c2:c31)

Jonny's spreadsheet.
Scarlet and Ioana.
Mya and Lianne.

Scarlet- I was really proud of mine and Ioanas work because we got further than we were supposed to ,we did a lot more than others. 😉

Mya - it was really hard at the start but after a while it was really fun when you get into it and you get to colour code all of the bars and charts with funky colours and it was good to work with someone different for a change.😀

Ben-I really enjoyed learning how to put Information into spread sheets and organise data. My favourite part was when we added up the amount of boys and girls writing hand and non writing hand by using a formular. It was quite a challenge by I found I it really enjoyable. 😀

Jonny boy-I really enjoyed learning about data handling  and  computing this year  and I thank  the teachers. 🎮

Mark- I really enjoyed the computing lesson about Microsoft excel because I find it really fun and enjoyable!😀

Spreadsheets for our coin turning challenge.

This week we have entered data from our coin turning challenge into Microsoft Excel. In the weeks to come we will use formulae, create charts and analyse our whole class data, drawing conclusions.

Don't forget to try the 10 second coin turning with your friends and family and maybe enter the data collected into a spreadsheet.

Class Neptune's data so far - Mark entered this data into the spreadsheet.

Spreadsheets - Excel 11.5.16

This week we used a step by step guide as an introduction to spreadsheets. Once we are confident we will input our coin turning data into a spreadsheet and use this to create graphs and answer questions.

We worked in pairs to input data about eye colour. We created a total cell by typing in the formula =Sum(B2:B6) and when the return button was pressed, the total appeared in cell B7. Then we went on to Chart Tools and experimented with labelling the axes and changing the text. Finally we changed the font style and colour customising our charts.

Year 5 Data Handling

2p coin turning investigation.

Today Year 5 started a data handling project with an introduction to spreadsheets (using Microsoft Excel).  Over the next few weeks the children will be given an opportunity to develop their data handling skills by carrying out an investigation  and processing the information gathered, using the appropriate software. They will then learn how to organise the data and enter formulae in order to carry out specific calculations.

They will investigate how many 2p coins can be turned over in 10 seconds using both their writing and non-writing hands.

Possible hypotheses -

The dominant hand is quicker at turning coins.

Now why don't you have a practise at home?

Completing the task
  • Place 10 2 pence pieces in a row along the edge of a table, with approximately a finger’s space between them.
  • Pupils to work in groups of 2/3, one timing, one counting and one turning the money.
  • Turn the coins over one by one, with only one hand, the writing hand to begin with.
  • Ensure that they go back to the beginning of the row after turning ten coins, and don’t work their way back.
  • The pupils can be given the opportunity in advance to practise turning.
  • Pupils should repeat the activity, using the other hand.
Let your family members try. Who can turn the most coins in 10 seconds?

Safer Internet Day 9th February 2016

We started the day by watching Newsround for Early Morning Work, followed by a SID assembly by Miss Smiles. In the afternoon we paired up to talk about different scenarios and what children and their parents should do to stay safe on the Internet.

 Social media

Social media

Social media

Social media

What do the social media companies say?

Snapchat wouldn't speak to Newsround about the survey.
Instagram wouldn't do an interview but told us: "Keeping the community safe on Instagram is our number one priority and we spend a lot of time thinking about it... we require anyone on Instagram to be over the age of 13".
YouTube wouldn't do an interview either, but stressed that the site is for people aged 13 and over.
And Facebook said they'd be happy to do an interview as long as we didn't ask them about under 13s, which we wouldn't agree to.

Then it was time for parent child role play. We wrote the scripts, rehearsed and filmed the mini plays using iMovie.

Here is a sample -

Child - Mum can I talk to you?
Mum- Sit down and we can have a chat.
Child - Mum I am really worried. Someone has asked me to meet them at the park. What should I do? What should I say? I don't know them.
Mum - first of all you are too young to go out on your own and if you don't know them, don't reply.
Child - They have a weird user name, it's pickle1234, I think it's suspicious and I am scared.
(Shows Mum the phone)
(Mum nods)
Mum - You are not going, even with me. Block them and ignore.
(They smile)
Both - Happy times selfie!!
(They take a selfie)
