Today Year 5 started a data handling project with an introduction to spreadsheets (using Microsoft Excel). Over the next few weeks the children will be given an opportunity to develop their data handling skills by carrying out an investigation and processing the information gathered, using the appropriate software. They will then learn how to organise the data and enter formulae in order to carry out specific calculations.
They will investigate how many 2p coins can be turned over in 10 seconds using both their writing and non-writing hands.

Completing the task
- Place 10
2 pence pieces in a row along the edge of a table, with approximately a
finger’s space between them.
- Pupils to
work in groups of 2/3, one timing, one counting and one turning the money.
- Turn the
coins over one by one, with only one hand, the writing hand to begin with.
- Ensure
that they go back to the beginning of the row after turning ten coins, and
don’t work their way back.
- The pupils can be given the opportunity in advance to practise turning.
- Pupils
should repeat the activity, using the other hand.
